Technique to Rapidly Restore Flailing Homeschool Reading Comprehension - Takes less than 20 minutes to learn.
As a homeschooling parent, you may sometimes worry if you are doing enough to help your child understand what they are reading. Maybe you feel like you are just following the textbooks and workbooks without really knowing if your child is truly comprehending the material.
The materials provide the "what to learn", but not always the "how to ensure it's being learned".
The good news is, there is a simple technique you can use to check your child's reading comprehension level as you go through any text or book together. It allows you to pinpoint exactly where your child starts to lose understanding.
Here's how it works: Have your child read out loud to you from the text or book you are working on.
As they read, watch and listen carefully for any signs that they have stopped fully comprehending what they are reading. These signs could include slowing down, stumbling over words, fidgeting, looking confused or dazed, or simply making mistakes. This video below will allow you to practice the listening part of this writeup to detect exactly when the reader has stopped understanding:
The moment you notice any of those lack of understanding cues, stop your child right there. Then work backwards in the passage to find the specific word they don't grasp the meaning of.
Ask them to tell you the meaning of a word or describe what it means in the context. If they can't fully explain it, then you've identified the root cause of their comprehension breaking down.
From there, you can take the time to ensure they understand that vocabulary word before moving on. Give examples, ask questions, and keep giving examples until they've got it. Then have them re-read that section where you found the word they needed help with.
If they are still not doing well, find an earlier word they need help with.
By carefully monitoring for comprehension lapses and zeroing in on the problematic words., you can handle the gaps in understanding as you go.
This simple technique, combined with the materials you're already using, can boost your child's reading comprehension abilities tremendously.
Don't worry if those moments of confusion come up frequently at first. That just means you've found the areas that need help.
Stick with this method and you'll be filling in comprehension holes as you homeschool your way through any reading materials.
